The Santa Fe Institute bet on its unlikely advantages

Right before the kick-off of the Second World War, two German chemists - Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman - discovered nuclear fission. Albert Einstein was amongst the scientists that warned U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt that Germany could now develop "extremely strong bombs, of a new type".
